Sunburn is not just suffered by those sun worshipers on tropical beaches, in fact sunburn can happen anywhere and at any time of the year.  The cause of sunburn is exposure to UV (Ultra-Violet) rays from the sun.  Certain times of the year, and certain places around the globe have more exposure than others but at one time or another everyone will feel the sting of ultra-violet burn.

Most people assume that the sun will help them tan, and this is correct mostly.  Exposure to UV rays will make our bodies produce more Melanin.  The Melanin is the dark pigmentation in the epidermis and gives our skin color. Melanin is determined by genetic factors and although your body can produce more or less (influencing tanning) the majority of peoples Melanin stays stable.  This is why lighter skinned people tend to burn more than those with darker skin types.  Melanin provides a shield for the UV rays however too much exposure will cause tthe skin to burn regardless of your genetic disposition and coloration.

So lets explore the best sunburn relief home remedies!

  • Hi, Jason. A very informative post about sunburn relief home remedies. It’s good to know that green tea and mint can heal sunburn. Green tea is a wonder herb with plenty of health benefits. Besides sunburn relief, apple cider and vinegar are also a natural cure for the removal of warts. Witch hazel is already popular as it also relieves diaper rash and irritation and a good hemorrhoid relief. By the way, which part of day that you have to avoid increase exposure to sunlight? Hope for your reply soon.

    • Hi my friend,

You need to avoid sun exposure at all times…however in most places midday sun (or when the sun is at its most extreme is the time to ensure avoidance of the direct rays.

  • Honestly this surprised me, and made me hungry!

Putting that aside, I had no idea Green tea could be used for anything other than drinking, and I have never heard of Witch Hazel before. It will be worth looking into once the summer comes around, the sun gets hot in So’ Cal.

Very informative, can Witch Hazel be found at a grocery store or a pharmacy?

    • Hi Caleb

Thanks for your comments. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

Witch Hazel can be found relatively easily. Most pharmacies probably stock it is the beauty product area.

You’ll find it easily at most good natural health stores and of course on Amazon.

      Best health to you

  • What great information in your post! As a fair-skinned woman with freckles, I can say with confidence how important it is to have a natural remedy to use on skin that has been burned by the sun. The last thing that you should do to damaged skin is apply a product that contains chemicals that could possibly hurt your skin in other ways. I remember getting sunburns as a child and my mother applying vinegar and what a relief that provided! For years I have kept Aloe Vera plants as they are a quick soothing fix for skin issues. Today we are much more informed of the dangers of too much sun, and resulting burns, so I applaud your post with the natural remedies you provide.

    • Many thanks Erin

Like you I am fair skinned and red haired…so I know the damage sun exposure can do.

The best solution is always prevention but if that fails these remedies will aid healing and comfort while also being actually good for the skin…that’s the beauty of nature

  • Luckily you can find apple cider vinegar and green tea and mint from your local store. I can think why mint would help to relieve you from pain because it has that cooling effect.

I will remember this list the next time that I go to the beach. Can you put them on before you get exposed to the sun or only afterwards?

    • Great question. These are post sunburn…As a preventative you can mix a large handful of mint with 2 tablespoons of water, 1/2 cup of coconut oil, 1 teaspoon of olive oil, 1 egg yolk and a squeeze of lemon…blend it all til creamy…this is the perfect sunscreen (add peppermint oil if you prefer it to be fragranced)

  • Hi Jason,
The wonderful article of yours has opened my eyes to things I never really knew for treating a sunburn. Now thanks to your wonderful information I have a full arsenal to treat sunburn. Are there any natural ways to help prevent sunburns, which is not normally discussed?
    Yours Truly,

    • Hi Carlton

      Great to hear from you.

One of the best natural sunscreens to prevent the burn before it occurs is:

1 generous handful of fresh mint leaves finely diced and crushed, add to 1/2 cup of coconut oil, 2 tablespoons water,1 egg yolk, 1 teaspoon olive oil and squeeze of lemon juice…add to a blender and blitz til creamy and thick…refrigerate…then apply to the skin…I promise your skin wont go green and you wont smell of egg…It sounds a pretty gross mixture but its gorgeous. If you do want fragrance add a few drops of peppermint essential oil…lovely
