These remedies can be combined or used singularly dependent upon your need. If diagnosed with, or have family history of, high blood pressure then you should take action now. High blood pressure is a concern…but be aware that as well as prescription drugs you can also help combat high blood pressure naturally and effectively. The following natural remedies will help.
Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure – An Overview
High blood pressure, medically referred to as “hypertension” affects many people. In America alone high blood pressure impacts one third (33%) of the adult population. That’s equivalent to 70 million people…in the US alone. Sadly the numbers are growing.
This may surprise many but 90-95% of high blood pressure diagnoses are clinically referred to as “primary hypertension”. This means high blood pressure with no underlying medical cause. That’s right…there is no other medical condition…so why is this condition affecting people?
What is High Blood Pressure? Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
Blood circulation is the most vital function for our body. Our heart is the primary organ associated with blood circulation. Therefore heart health is our primary concern. Our heart and associated circulation system supplies all the necessary nutrients and oxygen to every cell and organ in our body. As well as providing nutrients and oxygen our circulatory system also removes the waste and carbon dioxide.
Our heart beats..I’m sure you have felt your pulse and the natural rhythm of your heart. This heart beat that you feel is your natural pump working. With each heart beat your heart is creating “pressure”. This pressure is responsible for pushing our blood throughout our arteries and veins. This beating and associated pressure is what we refer to as blood pressure. Sounds simple doesn’t it?
In fact there are actually 2 forces which pump our blood through the body:
- First force – When you feel your pulse that is the heart creating “outward force” meaning your heart is pumping blood out and into your arteries,
- Second force – This is the time between pulse. It’s your heart resting. When you feel the pulse then you feel the heart pumping blood into the arteries. Between each “pulse” the your body is drawing oxygenated blood back into your muscles.
When we talk about high blood pressure we are actually referring to your natural pump and relax system being out of natural balance. This can cause damage to your health.
Hypertension – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure or “hypertension”, means your heart is having to work extra hard. It’s that simple….your heart is working harder than it should to pump blood through your body.
Healthy arteries are what we refer to as “semi-flexible” muscle tissue. This means that the muscle tissue is designed to flex, stretch, relax and constrict at varying degrees. However with hypertension the force of your blood pressure is above the natural “flexible” limits and can lead to an overstretching of the blood vessels.
This overstretching of the tissue can lead to tissue tearing of the blood vessels. This leads to vascular scarring. Vascular scarring leaves tissue that is “rough” and “irregular” and these irregular surfaces can cause blockages or surfaces which collect and catch cholesterol/plaque, and other usually cleared blood cells. In reality you are building an unhealthy dam.
This unhealthy dam is what we commonly refer to as a “blood clot”. If your blood pressure remains high over an extended period of time your vessel walls become weakened. Weakened vessels cause tissue damage due to oxygen depletion (scar tissue is thicker than your normal tissue and prevents the oxygen being absorbed in these areas).
Therefore when oxygen depletion occurs due to scarring it means the part of the arteries (before of after the scarring) deprives the rest of the vessel of fresh oxygenated blood. A lack of oxygenated blood leads to heart attack and/or stroke. Therefore the result of high blood pressure is:
- overstretch of blood vessel
- build up within blood vessel wall
- oxygen depletion
- lack of oxygenation
- heart attack/stroke
Prevent and Cure High Blood Pressure – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
In all my articles I always recommend a holistic approach. This means if you are already diagnosed with high blood pressure you should consult your doctor before using any alternative remedy. While all the following natural remedies high blood pressure are safe and effective you should ensure that no pharmaceuticals will have impact.
For those who wish to make natural change before diagnosis all remedies mentioned here are safe.
These holistic treatments mentioned in Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure, such as diet and exercise, will play a huge role in safely lowering blood pressure however some do include herbal treatment and therefore should be discussed with your medical adviser if you have any concerns.

Lose The Salt – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
In reality Salt is not the major issue when looking at hypertension or high blood pressure. The issue is actually part of the salt chemical component ….sodium. A little sodium intake is fine, but too much of it disrupts the balance of our natural fluid within our body. Our body naturally wants to “flush” the excess sodium (salt) from our system. To do this flushing it requires water..and this water is drawn from our tissue.
The higher requirement of “flushing” of toxins requires higher pumping. This “pumping” can only be done via the heart and means your heart is working harder than normally required to pump the blood and flush the “toxins” – hence the commonly referred to term – “high blood pressure”.
Most of the salt intake we have has nothing to do with your table shaker or grinder. Actually the vast amount of salt you consume (on average 1-2 tablespoons each day) has nothing at all to do with the salt you might sprinkle on our food at meal time.
In reality the excess and harmful salt, which is the problem for high blood pressure, is found within the processed food you consume. We spend so much time and effort reducing salt by not adding it to our prepared food however the harmful sodium is usually found within the food we eat…regardless of that salt and pepper pot on your table. It is already added…microwave or prepared foods contain huge salt levels…check your packaging!!
Be aware that packaging often refers to salt…NOT sodium…and sodium is what we need to be aware of. Even the “healthy” foods that are labeled low-salt can still contain way too much sodium (also found in sugars and fats). Food is all about taste and sodium increases the flavor of foods and therefore our dependency on a certain level of taste…
So to reduce sodium and sodium dependency you can do the following:
Reduce Sodium – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
In reality you can’t do anything about the sodium or salt added to already pre-prepared food. So what you can do is:
- Add no salt (or over time less and less) to your cooking. .Trust me….in a few weeks your taste buds will readjust and you wont feel the need for additional salt…in fact you’ll notice the taste and prefer it without!
- The manufactured products we eat are designed to “hook us”. As a small child and baby you naturally do not like excess salt…but you are conditioned to its taste over the years…and eventually we think we need it….salt makes us thirsty increasing our desire for more….this is part of commercial product design…so simply reduce your sodium intake. You will find that all food tastes better, how it was meant to taste…and if you add salt you wont enjoy it.
Hibiscus – Tropical Goodness – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
For centuries many cultures across the world have used the hibiscus to manage blood pressure. Initially modern medicine saw this treatment as simple folklore however recent scientific studies were conducted and showed that “folklore” had a basis of evidence of verified proof. Meaning it actually works. Like many natural remedies Hibiscus moved from common folklore into mainstream medicine!.
What is the scientific evidence:
- Hibiscus is a diuretic. This means adding hibiscus to your diet will draw sodium from your bloodstream. Removing the sodium decreases pressure on your arterial walls.
- Going more deeply into science … adding hibiscus to your diet will mimic angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Wow…that’s a mouthful…what does it mean? ACE inhibitors are in fact a chemically produced group of pharmaceutical drugs which are used in mainstream medicine to treat high blood pressure. So what Hibiscus does is mimic commercially created medicine…but in a perfectly natural way! makes us ask what came first…chicken or egg! Regardless of the intake…pharmaceutical or natural this works by hampering the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which plays a crucial role in the renin-angiotensin system- a hormone system that regulates blood pressure and fluid balance. In layman’s terms this relaxes our blood vessels. By relaxing the blood vessels it means our actual blood volume is lowered which then decreases blood pressure. .Hibiscus may not be as potent as prescribed pharmaceuticals…but over time and with constant use it will prove to be just as effective and, in my opinion, because it is natural it is also safer long term!
To prepare natural remedies high blood pressure using Hibiscus the recipe is below:
- 2-3 teaspoons of dried hibiscus
- 1 cup recently boiled water
- Optional flavoring – honey, cinnamon and/or lemon.
Bring your water to the boil. Add the hibiscus allowing the mix to steep for 5 minutes. Your hibiscus drink is ready…simply drink as is or add honey/cinnamon or lemon to provide a sweeter taste. ideally you should consume this tea 2-3 times a day.
Coconut Water – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
Coconut water, not to be confused with coconut milk/cream is the liquid naturally found inside the shell of the green and unripe coconut. Coconut water naturally contains high levels of organic potassium and magnesium. These minerals are beneficial for our bodies regular muscle function. How does this help – simply because our heart is a muscle.
To use Coconut Water as one of our Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure you need:
- Pure fresh and organic coconut water
Simply drink coconut water once or twice a day. Morning and night is optimum!
Hawthorn – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
Hawthorn is rich in flavonoids. Flavonoid benefits for health have been widely researched and have shown to have a major beneficial impact upon heart health. The impact of flavonoids includes positive impact with arrhythmia and heart palpitation. Flavonoids have also been proven to improve the function of our capillaries while also regulating glucose metabolism and, most importantly, naturally regulate arterial blood pressure and therefore the risk of hypertension.
To make a wonderful hawthorn ball cookie you need:
- 5 heaped tablespoons of dried and powdered hawthorn berry
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon powder
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Natural Cocoa or carob powder
How to prepare:
In a bowl add the hawthorn and cinnamon powders and thoroughly combine. Then to the dry powders add the honey (mix) and then just enough water to form a thick paste. Now thicken your mixture even more by adding the cocoa or carob powder. You should add enough to form a dough which comes clean from your bowl and you can roll in your palms without sticking or becoming liquid.
Once happy with the consistency roll your dough into small balls…about the size of a fingernail. Place them gently onto a baking tray and dry them slowly in the oven. Use a temperature of 120 Fahrenheit. Keep them in the oven until completely dry and easily removed from the tray. these hawthorn balls can be stored in an airtight container indefinitely. You can much them 2-3 times a day (only 1!) or add one to a mug of boiling water and dissolve as a delicious tea. Versatile and effective!
Exercise – The Easiest Of All – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
Combined with a healthy balanced diet exercise is possibly the most effective of all our suggested natural remedies for high blood pressure.
As previously discussed our heart is a muscle. It naturally then will grow stronger and become more conditioned with exercise. Having a well conditioned heart means that it functions well meaning less effort is expended pumping blood and therefore lowers the force in and on your arteries. This lowering of force means you achieve a lowering of blood pressure.
In the vast majority of hypertension, or high blood pressure, cases all that is needed to get your blood pressure normalized is regular exercise.
Try to achieve at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Exercise can take any form – just as long as it raises your heartbeat and gets you fitter!
Garlic is mentioned in almost every post regarding natural health and holistic lifestyles. Garlic is rich in many health giving and beneficial properties. It is also an excellent remedy for hypertension.
Be aware that garlic doesn’t work well eaten raw! Your stomach PH levels will neutralize the benefits within raw garlic before any good can be done. Therefore it is recommended that garlic, for hypertension usage, should be taken in tablet or capsule form. When choosing the tablets ensure the product states it has a high garlic allicin yield.
To use as part of your natural remedies high blood pressure you simply need to find high quality garlic tablets for hypertension and follow the directions provided.
Ginger and Cardamom Tea – Natural Remedies High Blood Pressure
The Indian Journal of Biochemistry & Biophysics, 2009, wrote about the studies done with Cardamom. The studies described in this article noted that a group of participants were given 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder daily over several weeks. From the studies it was shown that blood pressure in all participants was significantly lowered. Research is ongoing to pinpoint the exact reason for this change in blood pressure…but all we need to know in this post is…it works…let the scientists worry about why it works.
While swallowing a teaspoon of cardamom powder may seem a highly unpalatable concept you can achieve the same results in a much more delicious manner! Combining cardamom with ginger (another of natures warming spices which is known to improve circulation), creates a magnificent tea for heart health.
To make this tea you need:
- 1 cup of water
- 2-3 tsp of honey (or to taste)
- 1 tsp of cardamom pods
- 1 tsp of ground ginger powder OR (even better) 2-3 teaspoons freshly minced or diced ginger paste.
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
First you will need to crush your cardamom pods. Just bash them a bit to help release the natural oils. They do not need to be finely ground. Then combine all other ingredients in a saucepan (except the honey) and simmer over a low heat for 5-10 minutes until you get a reduced mixture with the color of rich caramel.
Add the honey to taste. You can also add some milk in the initial boiling stage or when preparing to drink. Strain the mix to remove all sediment and fragments of cardamom and ginger.
Drink morning and evening.
