Why do so many homemade sugar scrub recipes recommend you scrub with sugar? Because it is a natural source of glycolic acid which increases new skin cell production and breaks down the protein that keeps the dead cells hanging onto your skin. The result is glowing, polished, baby smooth skin!
Note: If you have very sensitive skin you can switch the sugars for oatmeal giving a gentle exfoliation.
It is always a good idea to do an allergy test if you have not used these essential oils or ingredients before. Rub a little into a small area and wait for 24h.

What Are The Top Oils For Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipes?
Our recommended oil ingredient, and the one that is most often used, is organic unrefined coconut oil. This is because coconut oil maintains a thick solid consistency and this helps prevents the course granulated sugar from dissolving. Not much of a scrub if that sugar disappears!
If you do not like coconut oil, or prefer to use another type, we recommend you choose grape seed, safflower, or almond. Just remember that they all have a distinct scent and their own texture so this will be reflected in the scrub. It pays to experiment a bit first so you are happy with the final product.
People who sufferer from allergies or who have very dry skin can even replace coconut oil with olive oil in their homemade sugar scrub recipes. The Olive oil makes the scrub a great deal greasier (in a good way), but it means the oil takes a much longer time to absorb into the skin,
Similarly for those who have more oily skin types it is best to avoid those that are greasy. We recommend you substitute it with a lightweight oil such as safflower or grape seed. These are absorbed into your skin easily. This keeps your skin well hydrated and prevents it from becoming clogged and greasy.
However to begin I always recommend you choose a good coconut oil. The texture is best for maintaining the scrub consistency of the sugar and it is neither lightweight or heavyweight when it comes to saturation. It is suitable for both dry skins and oily skin. However with trialing and testing you will soon determine which oil is best for your skin.
Top Tips For Your Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipes.
- To achieve the gritty texture that is required we recommended you use a ratio of approximately a half cup of sugar for every quarter cup of oil. Or to make it simple, double the amount of sugar compared to the oil.
- Avoid all products or ingredients that have water content. Water makes the scrub spoil. Nothing is worse than scrubs that have gone bad! So while the fresh flower petals may look pretty, if you add them to the mix remember your scrub will need to be used within a few days!
- To really make your homemade sugar scrub extra special and look great, add your favorite dried medicinal herbs, dried flowers, different textured clays, even dried seeds and fruits.
- You can use fresh citrus fruits in sugar scrubs. This really helps to get rid of any dead skin, helps exfoliate and they contain skin loving natural vitamins. However remember they contain water!
- Any homemade sugar scrub recipes that include fresh fruit, fresh herbs, aloe vera or any ingredient with water needs to be added at the end and then refrigerated as soon as possible, to avoid the sugars dissolving.
- Scrubs that include fresh fruit, fresh herbs, aloe vera or any ingredients with water should be used within a week, and kept in the fridge as the water content will make them spoil.
- Use dried fruits or herbs if you want the scrub to last longer and without the need to add other preservatives.
- To make scrubs last for the longest time possible, simply replace all the fruit or herbs with their equivalent essential oils.
- If you are intending to give your home made sugar scrubs as gifts you can make them look more attractive by using shades of sugar. Use brown sugar for dark-colored scrubs (chocolate or cacao) and white granulated sugars for light shades (rose or grapefruit). The light shades in particular will shimmer and look radiant.
- The amount of carrier oil you use will determine the amount of sugar you need to use. Simply adjust the ratio of sugar to oil to achieve the texture you want. Remember double amounts of sugar compared to oil is the starting ratio.
- When mixed you are aiming to achieve a texture that looks and feels like wet sand. This is the ideal consistency for your body scrub.
- Regardless of ingredients always store your homemade sugar scrub in an airtight container to prevent any contact with water or humidity. This makes it last much longer.
