Healing With Oils – An Overview
When we breathe in a scent, the aroma molecules travel to the back of our nose. The scent molecules then come in to contact with specialized nerve cells, these are called Olfactory cells.
The olfactory cells have tiny hairs which individually recognize specific aromas through a ‘lock and key’ process.
This means each of these hairs only recognizes a specific aroma.
The process also produces specific nerve impulses which travel to our limbic system. This is the part of our brain which is most concerned with our instincts and emotions.
It is thought that the activity produced within the limbic, when the nerve signal passes through, causes brain chemistry change and this it what causes mood change.
The whole process is called neuro-associative conditioning. This process triggers your body’s ability to heal and links the healing response to a particular aroma.
This process also explains why specific aromas can trigger very detailed memories or emotions.
Healing With Essential Oils – Specific Properties.
When we use aromatherapy as a therapy, this neuro-associative conditioning means that the properties that give each essential oil its characteristic aroma is also what enables the oils healing ability.
In each drop of essential oil there can be hundreds of phytochemicals (plant based chemicals).
These phytochemicals cause different reactions within our body.
Ketones are said to stimulate regeneration of cells, break down mucous, and have calming properties. They are found in lavender, patchouli, and hyssop essential oils)

Using Aromatherapy Oils To Evoke Well Being And Healing.
Our sense of smell can connect us with many emotions and memories. As already discussed the neuro-associative conditioning process is how aromas are able to bring on and influence emotional states of well-being.
By using aromatherapy in our daily routine we can influence our emotional health and well being and our body’s ability to heal.
Aromatherapy can be used in many ways, but the 2 most popular and well known methods are inhalation or topical application.
Using inhalation for aromatherapy incorporates several different methods. The process involves the essential oil being evaporated into the air. This can be done by using an electric diffuser, a vase diffuser, a spray, oil droplets, or vapor breath (such as in a steam bath).
There is much more to oils than just a pleasant smell. The aromatherapy oils provide respiratory decongestant, and psychological benefits. They also have antibiotic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and disinfectant properties.
Topical application is delivered through massage oils or via skin care and bath products. This enables oils to be absorbed through the skin.
Massaging the area of the body before, or during, application of the oil can boost our circulation and increases absorption.
Essential oils, as a rule, should never be applied directly to the skin. The oils should be diluted with a carrier oil.
This also makes the oils last a lot longer. You only need to add a few drops of oil to your choice of carrier oil. The most common carrier oils are Ylang Ylang, Sweet Almond or Olive oil.
It is recommended that if you want to use oils topically you should do an allergy test.

- Dilute your essential oil into your carrier oil at twice the concentration you intend using.
- Massage your mix into a small area of the inside of your forearm (approx 1/2 inch).
- If you find no allergic response within 12-24 hours, you can assume it is safe for topical application.

#1 – Basil Essential Oil.
Basil Oil is used for sharpening our concentration and is said to be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Basil oil can be used for treating bronchitis, sinusitis, colds and mucus cough. Applied topically it is said to be excellent for gout, insect bites, muscle aches and rheumatism.
It is also used for relieving deep seated headache and migraines.

Bergamot Essential Oil is said to be extremely useful for problems associated with the urinary and digestive tracts.
