  • Once the potatoes are cooked, drain thoroughly and return the potato to the pot. Add the butter, cream cheese, and milk, to the sweet potatoes. Mash with an immersion blender or a hand-held masher. For a thinner consistency, add more milk, if desired.
  • Once the potatoes are lump free and creamy, stir in thyme leaves, cinnamon, and all-spice until well blended. Season with salt and pepper, to taste, and serve immediately.

OPTIONAL GARNISH

  • To make whipped cream cheese topping, blend 4 oz. softened cream cheese, 3 tablespoons of milk and a dash of cinnamon with an immersion blender or hand-held mixer until light and fluffy.
  • Top the sweet potato mash with a desert spoon of the whipped cream cheese and some toasted walnuts, if desired. Enjoy! Definitely not for those watching their weight. A true Christmas treat!

What’s So Special About Sweet Potato Mash?

Trust me, creamy mashed sweet potatoes could be my, and maybe your, replacement for white potato any day of the week. While both have similar properties, they are entirely different plant varieties. With so many recipes available there is no surprise that these two super root vegetables have loyal followings and share many similar recipes.

But why prefer one above the other? You’d think with food it should be all about taste, but it’s not. One key factor with food is presentation and how the dish looks. The look is how we select something we want to eat. Especially if we haven’t tried it before. With sweet potato you have the added benefit of color, a gloriously rich orange dish that looks great on any table.

As its name suggests, the sweet potato is sweet. Thankfully its not a cloying sugary sweetness, but a delicate natural sweetness that you can enhance with additional herbsd and spices such as thyme, nutmeg, coriander and cinnamon.

Plus they offer us some variety. The great thing about mashed sweet potato is it can be a go to midweek meal, a comfort dish for eating in front of the telly, as well as looking perfect on the table at a formal event or fancy dinner party.

are mashed sweet potatoes Healthy?

One sweet potato offers:

  • Calories: 112
  • Fat: 0.07 grams
  • Carbohydrates: 26 grams
  • Protein: 2 grams
  • Fiber: 3.9 grams

The sweet potato has high levels of beta-carotene, that’s what gives it its color, and some of that beta-carotene your body converts into vitamin A.

Just one sweet potato provides 400% of the vitamin A you need each day. Vitamin A helps keep your eyes healthy as well as your immune system, your body’s defense against germs.

Vitamin A is also good for your reproductive system and organs like your heart and kidneys.

Sweet Potato is also full of natural fiber. This makes it a great dish for those with digestion or constipation issues, and for dieters as it will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

It worth remembering that while the sweet potato is healthy the added ingredients in recipes, or the other foods you eat with it may not be! Always check the recipe as what you put in it can significantly up the total calories and seriously lower the health benefits!
